Scholarships/Grants/Loans

FVC Fellowship Fund

A small grant program that provides direct assistance to veterans who are in the beginning years of farming or ranching. Awards range from $1000 - $5000.

Veterans Professional/Occupational Licensure Fee Waiver Program

A WI state agency program which grants fee waivers to qualified veterans when issuing initial licenses. Thousands of licenses are included which could save you hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Military CDL Test Waiver Programs

If you have a military license issued by any military facility that allows you to operate a military commercial vehicle, there is the possibility that you can use it to obtain a Wisconsin CDL. This process allows you to obtain a CDL by waiving the skills test due to your experience and training with these vehicles in the military.

Veteran Owned Business Certification

The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs recognizes the important role that veteran-owned and disabled veteran-owned businesses play in the Wisconsin economy. In order to help such businesses identify and promote themselves, the WDVA makes available a logo for certified veteran-owned businesses operating in Wisconsin. Consumers have access to a searchable list of Wisconsin Veteran Owned Businesses.

USDA Disaster Assistance Programs

USDA offers a variety of programs to help farmers, ranchers, communities, and businesses that have been hard hit by natural disaster events.

Natural Resources Conservation Service

Preference will be given to eligible Veteran Farmers or Ranchers applying for several types of conservation financial assistance through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP).

Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Grants

SARE offers competitive grants to fund research and education projects that advance sustainable agricultural practices in the United States. Some of the grants offered are for educators, but others are for farmers and ranchers.

Menomonie Market Food Coop

The Menomonie Market Food Co-op Fund Our Foodshed Grant program aims to support the small but often vital projects that help keep small to mid-sized farms and businesses viable and running. Every spring, grants are distributed to farmers and producers located within 100 miles of our co-op for projects that procure equipment, increase efficiency, or contribute to the operation’s sustainability.

Lakewind Organics Field Fund

Lakewind's community of shoppers, owners, and employees is committed to reflecting our co-op values by supporting the local farming community. As part of this mission, the Lakewinds Organic Field Fund (LOFF) grant program was created in 2011. Since the LOFF program’s inception, Lakewinds has given over $595,000 in grants to more than 70 farms. Grant applications are accepted in January.

Buy Local Buy Wisconsin Grant

Launched in 2008, the Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin (BLBW) competitive grant program is designed to strengthen Wisconsin’s agricultural and food industries by working to reduce the marketing, distribution, and processing hurdles that impede the expansion of sales of Wisconsin’s food products to local purchasers.​ A total of $300,000 is available in grant funding through the program; the maximum award for each project is $50,000, and grant applicants must provide a cash or in-kind match of at least 50 percent of the total project budget.

Fruit Guys Community Fund

Small farms are critical stewards of the land and key to an equitable food system. Fruit Guys provide annual grant awards to support sustainable agriculture projects that have large positive impacts on the environment, local food webs, and farm diversity.

Work Vessels for Veterans

Work Vessels for Veterans (WVFV)is an all-volunteer movement assisting returning veterans to begin their civilian careers or educational pursuits by acquiring and distributing the necessary start-up tools.

National Young Farmer Coalition Grant

Young Farmer Grants are designed to provide a flexible financial boost to young farmers building long-term careers in agriculture. This fund can be used for anything that will further your goals as a farmer, even if that means just getting started.

FACT Fund a Farmer Grant

FACT awards competitive grants of up to $3,000 to working, independent farmers located in the U.S. who raise beef cattle, bison, broiler chickens, dairy cows, ducks, geese, goats, laying hens, pigs, sheep and/or turkeys.

Sustainable Agriculture Education and Training Directory

A directory of hundreds of degree option in the agriculture industry. While not Veteran-specific, you can contact the individual colleges and see if they have a Veteran discount, or yellow ribbon program.

Veterans Outreach and Recovery Program

The Wisconsin Department of Veteran Affairs (WDVA) designed the ​Veterans Outreach and Recovery Program (VORP) to connect veterans to community services and provide case management and support, with a special focus on treatment and recovery.

US Small Business Administration and Veterans Business Outreach Centers

The VBOC provides programs and services that help start or grow your business, including: Boots to Business and Reboot, business training and counseling, assistance with business loans, and assistance with Veterans business certification.

Agrability

AgrAbility of Wisconsin provides assistance to farmers and farm families who have limitations due to farm injury or disability. Back pain, arthritis, Veteran disability all may qualify for the program.

SCORE

SCORE partnered with the USDA to offer mentorship to help farmers and ranchers succeed. A wide variety of mentorship is available from farming basics to website design.

Angelics Organics Stateline Farm Beginnings

Stateline Farm Beginnings® is a yearlong course, with 60+ contact hours of class time, designed to help launch or expand your farm business. The program has three courses: Farm Dreams Intensive, Skills Building Practicum, and Farm Business Intensive. In 2021 these courses went virtual. Angelics offers scholarships to military veterans. Contact them directly for more information about these scholarships.

Battleground to Breaking Ground

The BattleGround to Breaking Ground project is open to military veterans, active duty service members, their families and other beginning farmers and ranchers. The program consists of three phases that teach participants how to start, maintain and grow a farm or ranch.
